Second Christian Reformed Church, Grand Haven

Second Christian Reformed Church
2021 Sheldon Ave.
Grand Haven, MI 49417

Description

The organ is a Moller Opus 8044 two manual organ with 30 stops and 17 ranks, installed in 1950. Other than maintenance and some replacement of cracking drawknobs and tablets, the organ has remained as it was installed, a testimony to the reliability of Moller Organs. The organ is in an enclosure with only the chimes visible in the gallery at the rear of the nave.   The console is also in the gallery, fitted into the seating area for additional congregation and/or choir.  The organ is typical of Moller organs of this era, with most of the ranks consisting of 73 pipes.  Significant borrowing is used to fill out the Pedal division.

While this organ is not large or particularly significant, we include it here because of how well it fits into the architecture of this building, even though it did not originate here.  The inclusion of the console and organ case in the gallery emphasises the Reformed commitment to viewing Organ and Choir as part of the congregation, not as a means of grace.  Note that the raised pulpit, baptismal, and simple table in the Chancel  elegantly emphasise the Word and sacraments as a means of Grace, and were originally intended as the only adornment of the chancel.

History

This organ was first installed in the congregation’s original sanctuary at 5th and Columbus in Grand Haven.  The organ was moved to this new facility in 1966.  It has seen no significant modification or upgrade over its life.
