1201 Jefferson Street
Muskegon, Mi 49441
Description
Three manuals, four divisions, 54 stops, 36 ranks. The console sits in a fixed position at the right front of the nave. It faces the congregation, and has a unique bent leg seat. There are no visible pipes, as they are located in chambers to the left and right of the chancel. The manual divisions are all separately enclosed, and a crescendo pedal is provided. The organ includes chimes.
Many of the ranks in the Choir and the swell consist of 73 pipes.
History
The organ was provided as Opus 7696 of the Kilgen Organ Company in 1955, Replacing Hook and Hastings Opus 1927, from 1901. The Hook and Hastings organ was a two manual organ with 31 stops.
Kilgen Organ Company traces its roots to George Kilgen in 1851, and relocated to St Louis in 1873. The kilgen family has roots in Germany, in a family which built its first organ in 1640. The firm became George Kilgen and son in 1885, and added a third son who had been operating independently in 1894 and later a fourth son . Upon George’s death, disagreements between his four sons led to the end of this firm in 1939. A fourth son, Eugene, formed the Kilgen Organ Company, which continued until 1960, when it went bankrupt.
The Organ was updated in 2008 with a Peterson ICS-4000 multilevel combination action and midi sequencer.
